Overview

This is a unique hydraulic pump designed and patent protected by Dr. George F. Round, Professor Emeritus, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

The pump is unique in that it produces high volume and high pressure simultaneously.

GERO Rotary Pump History

The GERO pump grew out of the original concept of a pump that would combine the best characteristics of a centrifugal pump with flat head - flow rate curves, with some of the characteristics of a gear pump. The intent was to design a pump that would develop high pressures and high flow rates simultaneously.

The result has been a prototype GERO pump with two rotors rotated by a single drive shaft.

GERO Pump

Pump Description and Characteristics

The GERO pump is a pure rotary positive displacement pump that has been designed as a high pressure liquid, or conversely as a vacuum pump. A small prototype GERO pump with rotors made of 316-S stainless steel with a body made of aluminum has been extensively tested at discharge pressures of up to 1,000 kPa and rotational speeds of up to 1,500 rpm. Short experimental runs have been made at 4,500 rpm (about 2,300 kPa). The GERO pump has the smallest size/flow rate ratio of any existing pump. Because of the balanced purely rotational design of the pump, it is very quiet and almost completely vibration free.

Design Features

  • High delivery pressure
  • High flow/weight ratio
  • Quiet operation: due to the completely balanced rotary nature.
  • Output pressures can easily be changed by changing the angle of the outer ring.

Technical Advantages

Piston Pump Vane Pump (Flexible Vanes) Vane Pump (Rigid Vanes) Gear Pump GERO Pump
Pressure High Low Medium Medium-High High
Flow and Size Low Medium Medium Low High
Friction Medium High Very High Medium Low
Reliability Good Poor Good Good Good
Vibration and Noise Poor Medium Medium Medium Very Low

Economic Advantages

  1. Power to weight ratio advantage, which means less material, and lower manufacturing cost.
  2. The GERO pump is physically smaller than pumps of the same pressure and flow rate by about 25 %.

Applications

Potential applications for the GERO pump include:

  • Hydraulic machinery
  • Automobiles and Aircraft
  • Pressure intensifier - either as a first stage or final stage depending on the final pressure
  • Primary vacuum pump
  • Supplying hydraulic lines of brake systems
  • Water jets for dirt or paint removal
